low octane gas sitting in the tube, BUT, you say it starts pumping immediately, which is a little wrong. If you try to pump your gas the instant you select the grade, nothing's going to come out and the handle will just click at you. It takes (in my experience) about 4 or 5 seconds before it'll start pumping, and it doesn't charge until it's flowing fuel. Like I said, I'm not arguing anything here, I'm just saying that IF the fuel were sent back into the tank after someone was done pumping, that few seconds between when you select the grade and it starts pumping would be enough time for all new gas to travel up the tubes to the nozzle. You'd never be charged for air if the tube was empty before you started pumping. I don't know if the fuel sits in the line or not, and I really don't care either way (I don't push my car that close to the edge to worry about an octane point, and I use 93 anyway), I just wanted to state that.
